Maersk: Sailor Takes Warning Despite Soaring Rates

Jeff Lye, CFA, Equity Analyst
29 February 2024

Summary

Recent problems in the Red Sea and the Panama Canal have made people worry about the supply chain. This has caused the cost of shipping to go up a lot. Maersk, a shipping company, has said that if more ships are added, there might be too many ships by the middle of 2024. This could make the shipping cost go down, even if the problems in the Red Sea are still there. We think Maersk might not make much money, because the higher shipping cost is only for a short time and there are too many ships already. Maersk says they might only break even in 2024. We also think that people are hoping too much for Maersk to do really well in 2024. We think it's more likely that Maersk will do worse than people expect.
