Hikes & Strikes

Sam Stovall, CFP, Chief Investment Strategist

Summary

Investors faced challenges last week, including higher inflation reports, a UAW strike, and the possibility of a government shutdown. The 10-year yield, WTI oil prices, and the U.S. dollar also rose. Despite an initial uptick in equities due to strong retail sales, stocks fell again as the Fed may not be done raising rates. A November hike is still possible, keeping volatility high through October. Investors will have to wait until the FOMC meeting on October 31-November 1 for confirmation of the end of rate-tightening.
